She Found It!

Last year I wrote my mom a birthday post. I wrote a list of some of the great things she has taught me, and I may or may not have gotten a little emotional while writing it. That’s how I roll. In that post I alluded to my mom’s tech savviness:

Finding the link to my new blog is going to take at least another 6 months. And then finding this particular post…well, that could take years!

Well, wouldn’t you know, I received a call from my mom the other night telling me she had read my blog and by some gift from God (or WordPress) she found that particular post. Only took 15 months. She enjoyed it so much she printed off a copy, which was probably a good idea if she ever wants to read it again. Looks like I have only further cemented my status as the favorite child.

Birthday #33

There is a lot of pressure on Mr. S to make my birthday special. I start counting down to the darn thing 3 months in advance because I love having a birthday so much. I don’t care that I am getting older, I just focus on the good part. Cake, ice cream, an excuse to not work out all week (because I need at least a week to celebrate) and fun surprises. All things I love!
oreo cakeoreo cake2 I had just purchased this fun cake pan from Williams-Sonoma and my birthday was the perfect occasion to try it out. Or in this case, Mr. S was the first to try it out since the honored guest should never have to make their own cake. I think he did a wonderful job.

And what do you get the girl who has had 14 speeding tickets throughout her young driving career? A chance to go really, really fast. By pulling a few strings I was able to do some “hot laps” at Miller Motorsports. Mr. S was so excited about his gift to me he has been trying to give it to be for over a month. Unfortunately I didn’t get to drive the car, but going 115 mph in a mustang even as a passenger was pretty sweet.millermiller2Though I don’t care about getting older each year, and sure don’t feel it, I did get a small reminder that I am not as young as I once was. After speeding around the racetrack a few times I did start to feel sick. Thankfully nothing came up, but maybe next year I will just have a party.

I Wish I Would Have Been Born Naked

Today is my birthday. Oh, you didn’t know? Well that’s okay because I prefer to have my birthday celebrations last the entire month. Of course celebrating on the actual day is important, but if I can drag out lunch with friends, gifts and cards arriving on various days, and dragging the love out for as long as I can, I will. So it’s not too late to send that gift, email, or Facebook post my way. I don’t mind. I can wait.

picture-1Did you know that Fred Savage, of The Wonder Years fame, and I are the exact same age? I have no idea what time he was born, so he could have me beat by a couple of hours or even minutes, but we were born the same year on the same day. It’s also Tom Hanks birthday. Be sure to send him my best. And it’s also Argentina’s Independence Day. Someday I plan to go there for my birthday and soak in the euphoria of having an entire country celebrate my birth.

Not sure how I got to be so crazy about my birthday. Most of my friends and family, including Mr. S , prefered to stop celebrating once they reached a certain age. To me, making a big deal out of a birthday is the way it was intended. It’s a way to shout say “Hey world, I was born. And you are all better off because of it!” That might be going a bit too far, but you get the idea. It’s a day to celebrate YOU. A day where you can get away with just about anything because it’s your birthday. And if you are smart like me, you will do your best to have a birthday month. Or at the very least a birthday week. I promise I will make it a big deal. Just not as big as mine.

A Kind Of, Maybe, Indirect Tribute to Michael

I’m pretty sure I was the only person not watching, twittering, listening, or streaming the funeral of Michael Jackson yesterday. Do you want to know why? Because I don’t care. I haven’t cared since around the mid-90′s. He was the King of Pop. Past tense. Modern day Michael was just plain scary.

My favorite MJ era, and the one I choose to keep lodged in my memory, is that of the 80′s. Which got me thinking about all the other things I loved about the 8o’s. A few have made comebacks (unlike Michael) but this list is for the others still waiting to have their second chance at glory.

1. Day to Night Barbie- This girl is the ultimate career girl who knew how to balance her business and personal life, thanks to a skirt that could be turned inside out for a night on the town.

2. Barrel of Monkeys- One of my favorite presents I received for my 6th birthday, and inspiration for one of my favorite Toy Story outtakes.

3. Poochie- I had the Poochie Stamper and marked my belongings with pride.

4. Choose Your Own Adventure Books- Got to love books putting kids in charge. Genius.

5. Rose Petal- Watched the cartoon every Saturday morning, dressed in my Rose Petal nightgown.

And speaking of cartoons…

6. Saturday morning cartoons of the 80′s- Smurfs, Alvin and the Chipmunks, Muppet Babies, Snorks, and the Wuzzles.

It’s never too late to bring more of my favorites back.

Small and Super Things #4

I am off on my first long distance motorcycle ride over the 4th of July weekend. Work has been crazy and I need a couple days off. I also need a dose of Small and Super Things. And when I need it, you all benefit. Enjoy and have a great holiday weekend.

1- The 4th of July. Besides my birthday and Christmas, this is my favorite holiday. Fireworks, Neil Diamond and Patriotism. Any questions?

2-Only one week until my birthday. Gifts are still being accepted. Cash is okay too.

3-Discovering two new flavors of Extra Fruit Sensations gum.

4-Cuddling with Kingston. And Mr. S.

5-Neighbors apologizing for past transgressions. Does this mean I need to tone down the “passionate lovemaking?”

The Fire’s On Us

Since Mr. S’ birthday is on a Monday we opted to celebrate over the weekend. We enjoyed a wonderful dinner at Ruth’s Chris Steak House complete with a complimentary fire.
receiptI kinda feel a little jipped. They didn’t turn the fireplace on until we were half way through out meal.

Happy Birthday, Mr. S!

pieToday is Mr.S’ birthday. He is the exact opposite of me and hates all the attention a birthday can bring. Not sure what is wrong with him, but if you see him on the street be sure to tell him “Happy Birthday!” He will love me for it.

Mr. S is not much of a cake guy, so he requested pie. Being the loving wife that I am I agreed to give it a shot. Mr. S gave me a cookbook titled, “Sweety Pies” for Christmas, so finding a good recipe wasn’t a problem. The problem would be if it came out looking nothing like the picture in the book. I figured worse case scenario if it didn’t work out there was always Marie Callendar’s. I am happy to report that it DID work out. I made my first ever strawberry-rhubarb pie, with a homemade crust to boot. No back up plan necessary. Mr. S has even requested I make it again. Definitely a good sign.pie2
